Civil War Days in Monroe, Ohio

Last weekend I attended the Civil War Days in Monroe, Ohio. The event had food and memorabilia for sale, as do most festivals, but the main thrust was Civil War reenactors and their camp. The highlight was a battle by the soldiers, complete with guns and cannon. This was a great opportunity for a family friendly event; a chance to be entertained while you are learning.
It was much more than just seeing these folks in authentic period clothes. The reenactors I spoke with had an incredible amount of knowledge about the Civil War. Some of the participants played the part of historical figures and had complete command of incidents that transpired in the lives as well as the events that shaped them.
If you haven’t been to an event like this, it is well worth the time. It’s not a geek thing. It’s a chance to take a stroll through history and learn about a war and a lifestyle that is very important to the fabric of our country. It’s also a great way to spend some time with your family; not to mention how a child’s face will light up when they hear a real cannon go off.
