Harry Chapin and other important birthdays
This past week has been full of Birthdays. Among those celebrated was Bolognabrain.com’s own Suburbanhobo and singer/songwriter Harry Chapin. It was Suburbanhobo who actually introduced me to Harry Chapin almost 40 years ago; a peerless talent who remains one of my favorites to this day.
Friday, I knew Suburbanhobo, better known as Darrell, was playing a gig in Florida. As my wife and I sat around the kitchen table I sent a text to Darrell and jokingly asked him to play “Taxi” for me. That was Harry’s signature song and since it was his birthday it seemed to fit. To my suprise, my phone immediately rang and on the other end I could hear someone singing the opening lines of the song, “It was raining hard in Frisco.”
I was moved to the point of getting a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye that Darrell would stop what he was doing and take such a long distance request in the middle of his show. I was also sure Harry would have been moved to have such a birthday tribute.
Darrell’s birthday was yesterday. I hope it was half as special as he made me feel by playing a tribute to one of the greats.
