Here’s to bars and ‘Drinking With Men’
I came upon an interview with Rosie Schaap, the drink column author for the New York Times Magazine and writer of the book Drinking With Men. I have yet to read the book but the interview made me think of all of the time I have spent in bars.
When I was a boy, my father used to take me to his favorite watering hole. A year or so after that first memory my parents bought a bar, and then a second one. I spent a lot of time at the family businesses. Then I became a musician playing in bars and finally ended as a bar/restaurant manager.
In the interview she talks about drinking and talking with people in bars. As I think back to all the time I spent in bars I have many memories that wash over me in vivid color. It is as if I were back in that moment.
I have some incredible recollections about conversations and moments from both sides of the bar. Discussions of politics, life, music and every other subject under the sun, have shaped me in ways I can’t describe. I’ve seen and heard great bands; even had an occasional great moment of my own on stage.
So, for all of the folks who have a favorite watering hole, take just a minute and recount any stories, conversations or moments that stick out in your mind and try to imagine it happening in a shopping mall. Then you will join me in raising a glass to bars.
