Get the hell out of the way
My better half and I took a short road trip this weekend. We visited a group of old friends and associates on the left coast of Florida. It was only about a two hour drive, almost entirely Interstate highway, which brings me to my subject for today.
I have not gone off on stupid drivers for a while so I guess it’s time for a primer. It baffles me that so many people get behind the wheel and seem to think they own the highway. I know the laws are there for our safety, and I also know not everyone follows every rule and regulation; yours truly included.
If you drive the speed limit you run the risk of being rear-ended by someone exceeding the posted speed by some multiple of “Mach something or other?”
I was hit at 65 miles per hour, in the rear end, on the highway in North Florida, about two years ago. The scariest part was I saw the truck coming up behind me and realized she was not slowing down. You brace for the collision, but it’s never enough. My car was totaled. Even worse, I think the cop who investigated may have been related to the driver who was “allegedly” at fault.
My big issue is people who drive in the left lane, forcing faster traffic to move over and pass on the right. At one point, yesterday, two cars, obviously on cruised control, were riding practically side by side, preventing anyone from passing in either lane. You flash lights, tailgate, give hand signals… anything you can think of, and they still just creep along, oblivious to the rest of the world who actually have somewhere to go.
Another particular pet peeve is the guy who speeds up to pass, knowing they are going to block you in behind a semi, then when you can get over to go around, they slow back down. Somebody just shoot me.
My number one issue still remains drivers who refuse to use turn signals. I have written about this several times over the last three years and, try as I might, I don’t seem to be having much of an impact. It just makes sense. Let the drivers ahead of, and behind you, know what you intend to do in advance of any action. How many accidents could be prevented if people used those turn signals on a regular basis? I think… a lot. All the talk about not talking or texting while driving makes sense to me, but so does using your indicator lights.
OK… I feel better. I got that off my chest. Now use your turn signal and get the hell out of the way.
