Happy Birthday, Willie
The elder statesman of music, marijuana and mayhem, Willie Nelson is 80 year old today. To all those naysayers who told him this hard living is gonna kill ya: Who’s laughing now?
John Mellencamp started a campaign back in “ought10”, to get Willie a Nobel Peace Prize for his work with Farm Aid in support of farms and agriculture, and there is certainly an argument to be made that he deserves it more than some others who have been awarded that prestigious honor. There is a site on Facebook supporting that goal, but it only has 27K likes. Visit the site and support Willie if you feel like it.
One would be hard pressed not to have been touched by one or more of his songs. I remember Willie when he was the clean shaven, basic country star, years before he became the outlaw. He was so creative during those early years, everybody wanted a song. Some, like Patsy Cline, got her wish. Crazy is a song you still hear regularly. It’s even in my repertoire.
When Willie, Waylon (and the boys), like Jerry Jeff Walker, Kris Kristofferson and Hank Jr., got all outlaw on everybody, they changed the face of country music. There are people who are stars today, because Willie and those hard drinkin’, hard livin’ guys showed ‘em how it’s done.
So, Happy Birthday Willie. May you have many, many more, receive that Nobel Prize, and share a “fatty” with the guys. You da man.
